The Fed's Q1 (Jan) senior loan officer survey shows standards being tightened on C+I loans for the first time since Q1 2017. The Q4 survey had showed standards continuing to be eased but also saw weakness in demand for C+I loans after a positive Q3. Demand indicators for C+I loans remained negative in Q1, though a little less so. Standards were also increasingly tightened for commercial real estate loans for which demand continued to fall. Demand for mortgage loans was increasingly negative while demand for consumer loans weakened significantly. This report helps justify a cautious approach at the Fed.
